I would probably get liability insurance for driving in New Jersey. It's $25 a month and will protect you and your friends car if someone hits you.

Good Luck :) See my source below.

Generally if you are only driving the vehicle for a short while his insurance company will cover you. It has nothing to do with full coverage or anything like that. It has to do with who is a "covered person" as defined by the policy. Most insurance companies allow for permissive use of an automobile.

That would depend on if your friend has any restrictions on their insurance. Even if they have comp and collision, it doesn't matter. They go by the restrictions. Each insurance company is different. I would have your friend contact his insurance agency to find out. Usually, there is a restriction notice on his policy.

you have to ask your friend if it covers you. Unless it is comprehensive and covers any other driver it will be unlikely. You may also need an international driving license.
It will be relatively inexpensive in most cases to have you added as a named driver subject to approval by the insurers.
It may be nice to offer to pay any differential in the insurance price for the extra cost of adding you to th policy. ( short term such as holidays are not as expensive as longer term but also depend on any endorsements you may have on your license and experience and age etc.)

That depends on his policy. Mine covers myself, my husband and anyone NOT living in our home over the age of 18. Anyone in the home HAS to be listed in order to be covered.

Only if he has full coverage insurance or has listed you as an included driver on the insurance.
