In New Jersey, can you add a vehicle registered to someone else to your policy?

I want to sell one of my cars to my son (who drives the car anyway), but would like to leave it on my insurance policy. Can I do this? Do I have to notify the insurance company or do I just switch the registration?

no, if you tranfer the title to your son, then he needs to get his own insurance. unless BOTH of your names are on the title, then you have no insurable interest in the car. assuming their’s no lienholder on the car, if he were to have a claim w/ the car on your policy, the check would go to you, and it’s HIS car. I’d call around for different quotes or contact an agent to find the best price for your son and the car, THEN switch the registration. It will be more expensive for your son to carry his own insurance, so you may want to consider having him make the payments himself.
