Prepare to pay dearly for everything out there. If you have the means, fly out there to do some scouting before you move. The Los Angeles metro area may be your best bet for employment, but I hear that San Diego may yet have some signs of life in it as well. You could drive to California. Plan on a week or two, depending upon if you want to make side trips along the way. Get a U-Haul truck for your belongings, depending upon how much stuff you have. Or, you may want to consider having a yard sale before you go, to raise money for the trip. Be aware that California has tougher pollution control laws for cars than the rest of the country, so you should check under the hood of the car. If there's a sticker which says something like "Certified to California emissions standards," you should be okay. Otherwise, sell it when you get there, Good luck with it.
